The first Bizruption Meetup for 2017 was a resounding success. Although 203 participants registered online, organisers believe the crowd on Monday night was closer to 300.
In the expansive, warehouse chic environment of the new WeWork Pyrmont premises, attendees mingled and exchanged business cards and ideas before the inspiring presentation.
Sonia Wray was convenor for the evening, hyping the audience with her infectious energy. After some brief warm up and familiarisation activities, she introduced Balder Tol, Director of Community at WeWork who provided an overview of this quickly expanding share space company.
Following Tol was a panel discussion led by Pyrmont Ultimo Chamber of Commerce executive Murray Hogarth and featuring Gordon Burke, founder of 7 Areas and Ian Davidson, co-founder of local start-up company Go Far.
Burke is a business consultant and perpetual entrepreneur who shared his philosophy on the mindset and motivation required to succeed.
Ian Davidson discussed his experience in creating and developing a product and turning it into a viable business.
They were followed by NSW Small Business Commissioner, Robyn Hobbs in her third appearance at a Bizruption meeting. She was eloquent in delivery, erudite in content and clearly genuine in her passion to improve conditions for start-ups and small to medium sized businesses in NSW.  She strongly encouraged business owners to contact the government funded Business Connect service, which provides useful resources, advice and support.
And then came Pitchfest – a frantic, speed-pitching session in which each member of a group of eight has 30 seconds to give their “elevator spiel”. The elected winners of each group then gets the opportunity to repeat their pitch in front of the entire audience.
With a short inspirational film concluding the formalities, the hungry crowd was treated to some very tasty gourmet pizzas provided by Crust, Pyrmont, accompanied by wine care of The Italian Chamber of Commerce.
It was an enlightening and enjoyable evening with immediate feedback being positive.
The next Bizruption will be held at The Star on April 5 and will feature Sydney Lord Mayor, Clover Moore. If this meeting was any indication, you’d better register early.
