Exploring Pyrmont Ultimo
Imagine if everything you need for a happy, inspired life was right in front of you, in one place. Every shop, every museum, every gallery, and every cinema. As the French say, your life would become ‘la vie de quartier’ – you’d never need to leave the neighbourhood.
That’s fairly close to reality for the lucky residents of the Pyrmont-Ultimo precinct. For enquiring minds and culture vultures, this vibrant inner city village is a veritable gold mine. From cinemas and theatres to live music venues and art galleries, we have everything you need to stay informed, entertained and amused, right here in the precinct.
Located at Darling Harbour, the Australian National Maritime Museum is the national centre for maritime collections, exhibitions, research and archaeology. Australia’s largest collection of historical vessels, the Sydney Heritage Fleet, is stationed nearby on the way to The Star, Sydney’s only world-class casino and entertainment destination.
People come from near and far to visit Ian Thorpe Aquatic and Fitness Centre. Housed in a distinctive waveform building in the heart of Ultimo, the iconic $40 million facility offers a wide range of classes and recreational activities.
Whether you’re a local or a visitor, you’ll never run out of fascinating places to discover and explore in the precinct. Catch a movie at Hoyts Broadway or tune into some jazz at Foundry 616 in Ultimo – there’s so much to see and do.
Some of our mainstay cultural attractions have been around for generations, and exciting new hotspots are opening all the time. Ultimo’s Powerhouse Museum hosts some of the city’s most innovative cultural programs and exhibitions. Connecting art, science and technology, Culture at Work is a popular Pyrmont innovation hub for future generations of creative thinkers. And the learning and cultural exchange continues at neighbouring university UTS and Sydney TAFE.
Getting around is all part of the fun and exploration in Pyrmont and Ultimo. Cyclists and pedestrians can find their way through the precinct via The Goods Line, an exciting urban renewal project that turned a disused rail corridor into a pedestrian and cycle network from Railway Square and Ultimo to Darling Harbour. Stop off at Darling Island Square, or take in the many sights at Harbourside in Darling Harbour.
Sydney Fish Market in Pyrmont is one of the world’s most impressive fish markets, featuring an exhaustive range of seafood and the famous Sydney Seafood School. Tours of the Market are held at 6:40am every Monday, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday.
Pyrmont and Ultimo locals are proud of their quarter, and love to celebrate the rich diversity of the neighbourhood with regular festivals and events. Each year in May, the precinct celebrates its culinary excellence with the annual Pyrmont Festival, showcasing the region’s best wine, food and art over ten days.
