Tributes continue to flow for Irene Doutney who passed away on June 11 after a three year battle with cancer.
Doutney was much loved and respected in the community. Member of The Greens, City of Sydney Councillor, Deputy Lord Mayor, activist, and champion of the forgotten and marginalised.
She was a 78er – one of the original Mardi Gras protestors – and continued to advocate for the rights of the LGBT+ community. Her persistence on environmental issues led to significant changes including City of Sydney’s divestment of fossil fuels and their Greening Sydney project.
At the local level, Doutney was actively involved in REDwatch and The Factory Community Centre defending the needs and rights of people in Redfern-Waterloo.
A community gathering to pay tribute to Irene Doutney will be held on Friday June 29, 2–4pm at Redfern Town Hall. All are welcome.
