French restaurant Gourmandise de Paris will be the official provider of crepes for the huge four day Bastille Festival taking place around Circular Quay from July 13 to 16.
They’ve been invited to take part for each of the five years that the festival has been running. Audrey Ekler, co-owner of Gourmandise de Paris, says they love participating, especially now that they’re much more prepared for it.
“The first year we sold out in 2 hours…because we didn’t know what to expect. But now we’re experienced, so now it’s good. Every year we look forward to doing it because it’s really busy and lots of customers. We love to do it.”
They’ll be creating a special new crepe for each day of the festival.
Ekler and co-founder Johan Audibert have been in Pyrmont for two years and really love the area. They have regular customers who have been coming since the beginning.
“It’s like a little family,” says Ekler.
During the evenings they get quite a few French customers: “ A lot of travellers who are missing the food.”
During the day, for breakfast and lunch, it tends to be more locals, more Australians.
The crepes they make are tasty, healthy and naturally gluten free because they use buckwheat like they do in France. Ekler feels a certain patriotic joy in making the crepes to an authentic recipe.
“We love to make them, we love people to watch us making them –  especially when they come back and say ‘that was delicious!’”
In just the two years since they opened their restaurant, Ekler says they’ve seen a lot of growth and development in Pyrmont; more residences and more restaurants and other amenities. And she thinks that’s a good thing.
“I think Pyrmont is an amazing suburb and I hope more people will come here.”
