The impressive new design for Sydney Fish Markets was unveiled by the NSW government earlier this month with the proud boast that it will become a major tourist attraction for the city and a centrepiece in the Bays Precinct. The spectacular state of the art building is the collaborative brainchild of an international team of architects who worked in consultation with the government and major stakeholders for three years to define the consummate design. Re-located to Blackwattle Bay, across the water from the existing site, the new SFM will have stunning visual impact as well as being a multi-function facility with incredible commercial potential and social benefit. The design also incorporates sustainable features such as a roof that uses prevailing winds to extract heat and minimise air-conditioning; and also captures rainwater for treatment and re-use. With a promenade, retail section, bars, restaurants and, of course, the largest fresh seafood market in the Southern Hemisphere, this will be a very popular drawcard for visitors and locals. Construction is scheduled to begin in 2019 and be completed by 2023.
