PUCC welcomes the choice of Ultimo and the University of Technology Sydney (UTS) to host the first communications gateway for the new Sydney Community IoT Network, which is connected to the global ‘The Things Network’ movement.

Public access ‘Things Networks’ uses an open standard low-‐power wide-‐area communications technology called LoRaWAN. The Amsterdam-‐based founder of The Things Network, Wienke Giezeman, will be visiting UTS and the Ultimo project on September 5.

The Sydney Community IoT Network is being led by a company called Meshed, whose directors Catherine Caruana-‐McManus and Andrew Maggio spoke at the UTS launch.

Ms Caruana-‐McManus, a widely-‐acknowledged smart cities guru, also spoke at a recent event at the Greenhouse sustainability event series, hosted by the Powerhouse Museum in Ultimo, for which PUCC is a sponsor.

The third and final instalment of the Greenhouse’s ‘Future Cities’ event series will be held on the evening of September 6th, 6-‐9pm at the Powerhouse Museum’s level 1 cafe (fronting on to The Goods Line) and is timed to run with Sydney Design Week.

PUCC was represented at the Sydney Community IoT Network launch by Treasurer Murray Hogarth, who also is co-‐ordinator of the Smart Locale Ultimo Pyrmont initiative to fast-‐track the transformation of the precinct’s local economy towards the City of Sydney’s Sustainable Sydney 2030 goals.

PUCC is represented on the Smart Locale steering group along with a number of local organisations and other supporters including the UTS Business School, UTS Institute for Sustainable Futures, Sydney TAFE, the Total Environment Centre, Flow Systems, Sydney Water, The Star, the City of Sydney, Dynamic 4 and others.

The official media release for the launch of the new network at UTS in July said in part:

‘Meshed a Sydney based IoT integrator, in partnership with The Things Network (TTN) and University of Technology Sydney (UTS) have today launched a public access Internet Of Things (IoT) low power, long range wide area network (LPWAN) for Sydney.

‘The Sydney Community IoT Network will enable anyone within range of the Sydney gateway/s to connect their device to the internet for free, without the use of Cellular, Wi-‐Fi, Bluetooth or other wireless technologies.

‘The network is based on the open standard technology, LoRaWANTM which uses the 915MHz Industrial Scientific and Medical

(ISM) wireless spectrum band. LoRaWANTM is fast becoming an important low cost connectivity option to support the anticipated explosion in connected devices and smart sensor networks for smart cities, smart living, asset management, energy metering, water management, industry 4.0, smart farming and environmental monitoring.’
