The Star Sydney is celebrating success after two of its restaurants received hats at the national Good Food Guide Awards, contending with 500 of the finest restaurants in Australia.
Momofuku Seiōbo was awarded two hats while Sokyo was awarded one hat in acknowledgement of their consistent excellence in the food industry.
Held on home turf at the award-winning The Star Event Centre, the event highlighted the extraordinary achievements of Momofuku Seiōbo Executive Chef Paul Carmichael and his team who have retained two hats since the Good Food Guide Awards 2016.
Formerly the Executive Chef of award-winning Momofuku Má Pêche in Manhattan, New York City, Carmichael relocated to Sydney in 2015 to take over the kitchen at Momofuku Seiōbo. Originally from the island of Barbados, Carmichael delivers flavours of the Caribbean through his frequently changing multi-course tasting menu, which is inspired by the bounty of Australian ingredients and his mother’s cooking.
“I’m incredibly proud to be awarded two hats and excited to share this accolade with the whole Seiōbo team, who put their heart and soul into the restaurant,” said Carmichael.
Signature restaurant and standout culinary attraction at The Star, Sokyo retained the one hat it has held since the Good Food Guide Awards 2014, recognising Executive Chef Chase Kojima’s commitment to serving the sublime and spectacular flavours of Tokyo with a distinct Sydney twist.
The Star General Manager of Food and Beverage, Andy North said: “We’re thrilled that Momofuku Seiōbo and Sokyo have been commended by the Good Food Guide team for consistently delivering memorable dining experiences of the highest standard.”
The who’s who of the Australian hospitality industry were treated to a range of culinary delights at the event, with top chefs from Momofuku Seiōbo, Sokyo, BLACK Bar & Grill, Balla, Fat Noodle and The Century serving a special showcasing the best of The Star. The standout dish of the night was Carmichael and Kojima’s collaborative spicy dengakuman glacier 51 toothfish with secret spicy umami marinade and fermented salad.
Considered Australia’s most trusted guide, the 2018 Good Food Guide has been researched and compiled by a team of respected critics, and co-edited by Roslyn Grundy and Myffy Rigby. The highly respected ‘hat’ award system showcases the best restaurants in a suite of categories, from Hobart to Darwin, Brisbane to Perth.
