After a four year absence UPtown Festival will return to Quarry Green, Ultimo in October, reviving a popular annual event that ran for 31 years until 2012. Through the efforts of staff and volunteers, Pyrmont Ultimo Network of Services (PUNS) will reproduce the festival in all its former glory.
When it began in 1981, UPtown Festival was a humble community gathering. The precinct had a much smaller population and there was a friendly rivalry between the neighbouring suburbs of Pyrmont and Ultimo.
Over time, the festival gained momentum and size, culminating in an all-day multicultural arts, music, entertainment and food extravaganza featuring two performance stages, high profile artists and drawing attendees from all around Sydney.
The comeback event promises to take up where 2012 left off, with two stages providing continuous entertainment including flamenco and indigenous performers, local choirs, bands a DJ and children’s entertainers.
There will be more than 35 stalls offering tasty local fare, special treats, clothing, gifts and lots more. Performers and artists will be holding interactive workshops, encouraging involvement from festival goers.
The theme for the festival is “Our Stories” and in support of that theme, UPtown has created the “Humans of Ultimo Pyrmont” project. Locals are invited to create a profile of themselves by relating an anecdote or memory of life in Ultimo Pyrmont accompanied with a photograph. These will then be shared through promotional material including print and social media.
Organisers are inviting stallholders to apply and would love more volunteers to sign up and help with various roles.
