The Ian Thorpe Aquatic Centre is celebrating its 10th Anniversary this month with an open day on Sunday August 27th.
Entry will be free all day, with special events scheduled between 10:00am and 3:00pm including a giant pool inflatable, aqua demonstrations, free fitness classes, water games and a BBQ.
The unique aquatic centre building, shaped to resemble a breaking wave, was one of the last designs by esteemed architect Harry Seidler. Selected from among three invited submissions, Seidler’s design for what was then the Ultimo Aquatic Centre and Public Space was put into progress in 2001.
However, problems with budget and other issues ground construction to a halt until 2004. A new Lord Mayor of Sydney (Clover Moore), a reinstituted financial commitment of $40 million and a feisty campaign by locals got the bulldozers rolling again.
The centre was renamed after one of our greatest swimming champions – five time gold medal winner, Ian Thorpe – and completed and opened in August 2007. Sadly, architect Harry Seidler did not live long enough to see it finished, dying in 2006 at age 82.
The centre features three indoor heated pools and a spa, health club with an extensive cardio and weights area, spin room and group fitness studio, and a sauna and steam room to enjoy all year round.
In addition, the facility has disability access and parking, family change rooms, and a café.
