Tradition is an important concept in the Italian culture, particularly when it comes to food  (which is also an important concept!)
Made In Italy is an Italian restaurant that embraces tradition; from the authentic ingredients used in the kitchen, to the boisterous, familial mood in the dining area.
Owner, Sergio Checchi came to Australia 25 years ago with a suitcase, a pocketful of ambition and that innate Italian desire to feed people.
He now has five Made In Italy restaurants in Sydney, maintaining integrity by sourcing fresh vegetable from the local produce market and seafood from Sydney Fish Market daily.
Manager of the flagship Pyrmont restaurant, Francesca, came to Australia 11 years ago and moved to Pyrmont for four years soon after arriving. She herself used to frequent Made In Italy and has noticed some differences between then and now.
“I can see the crowd has changed. There’s a lot of young people, travellers, young families, so I can see the clientele has changed.”
She has observed the population demographic going from predominantly 40 to 60 year olds, to 20 to 60 year olds. There are many more young people coming to the restaurant.
“I recently changed the wine and cocktail list, just to make it more modern…and we changed the menu and the look of the restaurant to make it more groovy,” says Francesca.
Apart from in-house dining, the Pyrmont store can accommodate functions: 60 people seated, or a canape menu for 90 standing inside and 60 outside. They provide catering to local businesses and organisations and have a number of prominent corporate clients. And of course, they deliver pizzas.
But the true Made In Italy experience comes from dining at the restaurant. It’s cheerful, vibrant and there are always kids running around. As Francesca sums it up: “It’s very Italian!”
