The Star’s design competition for the new hotel/apartment tower to be situated near the casino complex is underway, and the Design Review Panel has had a sneak peak at three shortlisted contenders.
The designs have been submitted by architectural firms BVN, Francis-Jones Morehan Thorp and Grimshaw. Not much information has been disclosed about any of the concepts, although a visual impression has been supplied for each and shows them to be quite diverse.
Whichever design is chosen, the final tower will include 220 premium hotel rooms, 150 apartments and 20 new food and beverage venues within a hotel run by The Ritz-Carlton.
Developers are racing to have planning completed before James Packer’s Crown Resort commences operation at Barangaroo, scheduled for 2020.
The Design Review Panel that will help make the final selection includes NSW government Architect Peter Poulet, Group GSA director Lisa-Maree Carrigan and Craig Allchin, Adjunct Professor of Architecture at the University of Technology Sydney and director of Six Degrees Urban, among others.
